Design for Dementia Studio
by Dr. Flavia Marcello
Working with lead industries in dementia and health care services and design professionals, this project sets interior architecture students the challenge of adapting existing residential aged care facilities that must meet the growing needs of dementia care in Australia.
Last year students presented to an industry panel that included representatives from Alzheimer's Australia, Homestyle Aged Care, Allen Kong Architect and Erigo Health and Aged Care Solutions. Their real-life client, Twin Parks Residential Aged Care in Reservoir was also there to give feedback on the work.
At the end of the studio, Twin Parks funded an exhibition at the facility to show the residents how their centre could be transformed through good design. Thanks go to Emma Aspinall, Jess Hamlyn, Paris Triantis and Karina Snibson for helping out on the day.
Twin Parks were so happy with the work the students produced, that they chose two designs to actually build. Congratulations to Kyle Ting and Karina Snibson.
The research team also presented their work at the 8th International Conference and Exhibition of the Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia, in Christchurch.

Flavia also presented at the Florey Institute's 3rd Optimising Health Forum in February this year: 3rd Optimising Health Environments Forum.

The Design for Dementia Studio is now getting ready for its second iteration. Dementia design experts Allen Kong Architects will be joined by Lyons architects to provide real-life professional advice to students who will tackle a new aged care centre in Vermont that wants to update to a new family-type care model.
